First let me say that most viruses
are more 'irritants' than anything else. Most will not eat your
computer or chip the paint on your new car. |
various types of files
> ".zip" are notorious for having malicious code imbedded in them. Most virus scanners cannot penetrate the outer code and interface with the inner code to spot the virus. If you are not sure, my advice is to not open it. > .pif and .scr are also notorious for viruses code. (.pif is an old windows format rarely used anymore) (.scr is a screen saver file, I do not need a screen saver badly enough to open them). > .cat files seem to always be viruses (in my experience) .bat, .fat, .phat are files already in the core of your computer. You should have all you need. I suggest never downloading or opening them unless you are a pro. > .exe files are 'self executing' files. Be very wary of them. > If you are interested, you can go to symantec.com to learn more about viruses. > But, don't freak out about them. Best to have a good and updated virus scanner and just be careful. |

Virus update by another webmaster writes - e-mail users are still battling with virus-infected attachments. I urge everyone to note the type of file he finds attached in e-mail. Do NOT open attached files having the filename extensions .386 .hta .scr .bas .js .sys .bat .jse .vb .cmd .lnk .vbe .com .msi .vbs .cpl .msp .wsc .dll .ocx .wsf .exe .pif .wsh Be aware that individual files within compressed files (filename extensions .zip, .taz, .tgz, .gz) also can be (and nowadays, frequently are) infected. |
The current crop of e-mail viruses can be perplexing. Bear in mind that what you get in your e-mail may not have been deliberately or even accidentally sent by someone in particular. The viruses "spoof" (fake) the sender's address, and your address was probably picked at random by the virus itself. | ||
