SLEEPY HOLLOW Original Proposals
Page UPDATE
3/21/05
ALL INFORMATION HERE IS TENTATIVE - THE PROJECT HAS NOT YET BEEN
APPROVED BY THE BATTLE FIELD GROUP OR THE COUNTY GOVERNMENT
PROJECT PROPOSAL
PROPOSAL Originally printed 10/27/04 The following is an amended version
Rose Barn Theatre Presents SLEEPY HOLLOW AND THE HEADLESS HORSMAN
Created and Directed by Dr. Larry C. Bobbert
Preamble (added 3/19/05)
The project as presented was/is intended to be a COMMUNITY event not
just a RAT production. It was also designed for replication in future
years with a minimum of fuss, bother but it is compartmentalized so that
other organizations could join. i.e. a choir in one of the “stages” – a
high school drama group on a future “stage”.
The design includes 3 major community groups who are known to “get
things done.” Done well it could be a very good “money maker” for all
participating groups.
Richmond Area Theatre, Battlefield Group and Kiwanis – share work,
publicity and profits
Talent: RAT actors, students, church members (maybe chorus)
Workers: Kiwanis members
Extras: Battlefield people
- Horse Back: headless horsemen and on horse back to attack the wagon.
- Pyrotechnics (explosives?? Guns??)
PRODUCTION VALUES AND ACTIVITY SEQUENCES
(Group 1)
Part 1 15 or 20 people Enter barn with small stage for “play”
Projections, Live shadow figures in “loft” behind painted sheets
– lights off and on - loud sound effects of rain – thunder – screams -
– Ghost figures (dummies) swing from rafters
Play starts with narrator and a few actors
Part 2 Headless Horseman rides in beside stage (Stg Right)
Hunters shoot at it from back – Yelling and scream –“get him”
Actors scream and try to hid on the stage – grab 2 kids(actors) from
audience
Part 3
Narrator - (panics) – gets “audience” people to run out beside stage (Stg
Left)
to South West Barn Doors Out of barn
Part 4
Next group enters barn sits to effects, ghosts, music and sound (same
sequence as group 1)
Group 1 (continues) seated on a “hay/straw” wagon
Part 5
Wagon Group walk south of barn toward the forest (Can go past not
in—swampy) (Do lights in forest with portable generator)
The driver has two assistances (actors who set the stage for coming
events)
Actor joins group “just up at the next turn is where Harry….lost his
head”
STAGE 2 (set up near rocks with 3 sides incase of inclement
weather)Actors perform a scene at that point – from horse back if
possible
Sleepy Hollow scenes and scary characters pop out from behind
trees—These I thunk could be Dane’s Lapers -- 2 or three between the
“Stages”
Part 6 Group passes into dimly lighted area
Men shooting (loud blanks) and screaming suddenly Pass by hunting the
headless horsemen -- These I thunk could be some of the “re-enactors”
Part 7
Headless horsemen seen up ahead but rides out of light—Actors scream
(look a like but different one from guy in barn)
Part 8 Tree (scenery) falls and almost hits the wagon with sound effects
and screaming
Part 9 Group goes through edge of swampy area with sound effects
Actors warn “this is the swamp in which ……got beheaded….”
maybe dead people characters
String and rags hang down from trees to wipe faces
Actors join group for a few yards—can deliver dialogue and keep kids
from pulling stuff down)
Fog machine in swamp
Maybe light Rain with hose
Part 10 STAGE 3 Group passes Scene with women and children hiding and
scared
(dialogue from Sleepy Hollow)
Part 11 Scared Kids (actors) run up and try to join the group but are
chased away – maybe with blood on them
(Dialogue –“ being chased by headless horseman”
Drivers assistances (actors) chase them away
—so they can double back and get next wagon
Part 12 STAGE 4 Group approaches a shack with Fence that blocks forward
progress
in walled structure(Church like as if a funersl) – somewhat maze like
Bodies described in SH or simulated grave yard
Part 13 Crosses bridge in far corner of pond -- a bloody head is tossed
at them and lands in middle of bridge (to later be retrieved and re
used) horsemen ride over the hill attack them yelling and screaming
Pyrotechnics greet wagon audience
Part 14 Stage 4 Denouement (to be decided later)
Part 15 Group led past the barn theatre to parking area.
Other scenes could be added in other years
Optional Events
Many options for adding people if we have lots of actors and or
horsemen.
One or all the organizations could run a refreshment stand with cider
and cookies
Etc. Could sell small candy bars cheap as a treat.
Or could include small something as part of the price of entering so
kids leave with something.
Could set up a photographic concession with a computer and camera to
sell pictures
of people with a headless dummy, etc
. or pic of audience when headless horseman first is seen and shot at–
the flash could be part of the effects
Could have a few ponies for “little guys” to ride a pony/horse
while older ones join the Haunted Sleep Hollow “play.”
Could have tours of the house for a small fee
Could have an apple bobbing tub or two

ANOTHER SCENARIO FOR THE
PROJECT
. . My concept of
the SLEEPY HOLLOW "scary" EVENT is to get "people in charge" of
various areas.
For example the Battlefield
people could open their house, but they'd be in charge of
it.
The Kiwanis could do
concessions and be in charge of it and maybe parking since a "flow
of traffic" is necessary.
RAT people could
divide up the various Stages. Following will be a map of how I see
the "stages" set up.
Me - I'd be the
producer and direct Stage 1 -- the one in the barn. I love your
idea of running them out of the barn through a sound effected maze.
Each Stage would have a "Director/Stage
Manager" There would be five plus the bridge.
To me there is no reason that the
"story" need played out in the same order as the original story. This
is to be a "fun" EVENT not just a moving theatre in my mind.
I hadn't asked any one yet, but I 'd
seen Stage one in the barn described previously with Alice as the
Stage Manager and the Narrator.
Stage 2 would be a 3 sided "hut" near
the rocks with a 5 minute "playlet" (the exact scenario for each stage
has not been established and could be done in concert with me (the
producer) and the individual Director/writer/StageManagers.
Stage 3 would be after shooting
Soldiers had run past the group of "customers"
Stage 4 would be on the far side of the
pond after the bridge so the final scene if played with on the bridge
would not be the last thing to be seen.
Stage 5 also on the west (far side of
the lake) and also over there a group of soldiers to shoot and chase
around a little in with an area just this side of the rise --
pretending to chase the headless horsemen shooting and yelling
(limited area lit with torches for the protection of the horses)
and the Final Stage 6 would .....no idea yet
I saw two roles for you. the first
would be to be 1. one of the Director/writers/StageManagers for a
Stage and 2. Create scenarios for "in character"
encounters for
the customers as they went between stages.
I thunk a long time ago that I'd gotten
the ok from RAT to pursue this?????
So I think the next step is to decide
if I'm the producer/director of the event
Then a committee to be or select
directors/StageManagers/writers and "subjects" for each of the
stages.
Then you and I can discuss what you
want to do with the "encounters" between stages.
I like to set things up with
contingencies i.e. if a director/writer quits it only effects one
stage which could be eliminated, reassigned or modified.
If we do this right, it could be an
annual fund raiser. Like maybe one year before dusk we could have a
movie shown. or a short play in the barn or a barn dance or or or.
The next year ....well, the idea is to
put it up so no one has too big a part that they will be too important
to get in the way of success.
This first year I hope to have everyone
one board and am planning a trip Oct 4 -15, so I can come back and
pick up any slack or rest while i watch ya all work.
ople for the street scenes
